Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of them do not have access to books at home, and therefore do not read out of school. Most of my students read below grade level, and need help in reading. By providing them choice in books, this increases their desire to read.

My little cutie pies are energetic and loving kids.

They want to succeed in school. They work hard and play hard. Our school is in an area that experiences a lot of poverty. Our school was built over fifty years ago, and has recently had an addition to accommodate the number of students in our area. Most of my students are bilingual. Spanish is spoken at home and English at school. Many of my students are below grade level because their parents cannot help them with reading and homework, as they do not read, speak, or write in English. This is especially challenging for my students as they try to succeed in their bilingual world. My students love to read! When they finish their work earlier than some of the others, they get to have free reading time. They love this time of day and the opportunity to look at books from the school library or my classroom library. They love to read together and alone. I love the excitement in their faces and voices as they share and read books.

My Project

We have a morning routine called "The Daily Five". Part of the daily five is reading a "Good fit book", or a book on their level. The idea is to have a good selection of books that students can choose from because when a child is given the opportunity to choose what they read about, the greater desire they have to read. The resources I am asking for are the perfect beginning point for these young readers because they will be able to go to their level and pick from there whatever they want. This gives students a choice in reading while keeping them in their reading range. As a teacher this is helpful because it ensures that students are not choosing books that are too difficult for them to read, reducing frustration in reading. My kids want to succeed. We talk about how their job in first grade is to become readers. In order to do so, we need the appropriate resources to help them reach their goals.

By having a guided reading leveled library available to us, my students will be empowered by their ability to choose.

They will be empowered as they move from one level to the next, watching their own progress and feeling successful in the efforts the are making. This library will be the foundation for my students to build on as they become readers; then they will be able to use this foundation for the rest of their educational career. What a blessing and gift this would be.
