Reading a Good Book is Like Taking a Journey!

My students need quality literature that will assist in building a passion for reading, that will spark the interest of my young readers, and provide them with a chance to fall in love with books!

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, some of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. When my students step into my room they are able to leave some of those challenges at the door. I have a classroom of highly energetic kindergarten students who have an endless appetite for learning!

Kindergarten gives children the opportunity to grow and develop through play and exposure to quality literature — the way children learn best.

My students are on a journey as readers. They are at such an important time in their academic lives to grow a passion for reading. Right now my students are expanding their love of learning, building knowledge, developing their ability to get along with others, and exploring ways of reaching out to the world.

My Project

This project will help me to be a teacher who will be reading to my students throughout the day. One of the most important things I can do as a teacher to prepare children for success in school and in reading is to read aloud to them. Read-alouds help build listening skills, comprehension skills, and so much more. At times the children should also be reading, to themselves, other students, or the teacher. Giving children access to all varieties of literature is extremely important for their success. Children’s literature is of value because it fosters personality and social development.

Children are very impressionable during the formative years, and children’s literature can help them develop into caring, intelligent, and friendly people.

Providing a literacy rich classroom with multiple opportunities and forms of reading each day will aid in providing readers of every ability and modality the chance to fall in love with a good book. This project will assist in building a passion for reading in our kindergarten classroom and will spark the interests of my young readers and writers.
