This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low-income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. Most of the students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students can not afford basic school supplies, get a good night sleep, concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about.
It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on each of my students' needs through small group and one on one work. It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our schools limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
Fourth graders are ready to delve into complex texts. There are four units that make up Reader's Workshop. Briefly, in Unit 1 students study the complexity of characters and themes, Unit 2 invites students to form research teams to investigate topics about extreme weather, Unit 3 has students explore history while developing their skills in cross-text synthesis, close reading, and evaluating multiple points of view and finally, in Unit 4 students join historical fiction clubs.
Reader's Workshop will build my students fluency, knowledge, stamina, and collaborative learning!
Each unit focus' on specific skills that will connect to student growth. Students will practice reading, small groups, stations, strategies, and an abundance of other academic skills.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
