My students need authentic French books in order to increase literacy. Reading is crucial when teaching French. Many have yet to appreciate the love for reading.
My students are always eager to read a French book. It is imperative that I provide them with a variety of books and/or a class set. A wider selection would allow them to chose their reading and capture their imagination. A class set would enable us to study and analyze the reading as a group.
My school is a Title 1 institution.
While 90% of my students come from households high in poverty. They are students who have a strong desire for education, inquiry, and learning. It is important for my students, especially in my upper French classes, to experience authentic literature when they are in my class. I want them to experience and enjoy reading French as much as they can.
My students come to class with a broad range of interests. My objective is to get them to read. If I can provide my students with a wide selection of books, they will be more eager to read and in the process, their imagination will be captured. The books will open a whole new world for them. In submitting this project for funding, I am hoping to build and diversify my French library. Many of my students already read books but I find that I need to diversify my library in order to engage the others. My objective is to reach every student in my class. I want my students engaged and I want my students reading.
My Project
I have 20 minutes of silent reading in my class every day. Students are to read authentic books or articles and then, share their thoughts. They may share their thoughts verbally or they may share their thoughts in their journals. In this particular routine, students are free to select their reading.
I also have my students read one book perhaps Le Petit Prince. We begin by reading silently then, we read as a class taking turns. I have questions they need to answer in writing and verbally. We complete the Socratic Seminar whereby students discuss the content of the book in French. Then, they have to write about it. Most of the writing assignments require my students to write a 250 to 500 word essay in French. A class set of books would enrich my students and the curriculum.
I teach Upper Level French. It is imperative that my students read. We do not have much money and my students come from high poverty households. Your donations would be so appreciated!!!
My students and I would so appreciate your support with this project.
French books are quite limited. A diversified library would be an exciting addition to my classroom. Students would have the unique ability to select their reading for the day. As they read their book or article of choice, they are increasing their literacy. DonorsChoose can make a difference in each of my students' lives!
