Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go." (Dr. Seuss) Learning to read will take my students far in imagination and in life. Reading combats poverty, provide opportunities, and build self-esteem. It starts with us, in kindergarten.

My students are eager learners, excited to be at school and ready to be literate.

They mostly come from low-income families and 75% are learning English along with the rest of the curriculum. My students often start school behind more affluent students because they do not have access to preschool. Their parents have few reading resources at home but eagerly read to their children whenever I can send books. They come from hard-working, loving families who want their children to succeed. To support their reading growth my students need leveled books with good pictures, well designed text and the "feel" of real books. We have been using many photocopied books but they don't bring the same excitement as a full color, shiny leveled book. My students love to use the library and look through my classroom books but find the text too difficult. Providing quality leveled readers will build that excitement and confidence that comes with reading "real" books.

My Project

Quality Books! These specially created books help young readers to learn the skills of reading one step at a time. With limited vocabulary and lots of picture support these books will help my students to understand what it means to read, to learn new words and to be able to problem solve when they get stuck. The beautiful pictures, shiny cover and "real book" look of these readers will generate energy, excitement and confidence in my young readers. Having access to multiple titles at an appropriate level will increase the amount of reading practice each child gets. These quality books will help me to guide my students into the world of literacy in a powerful way.

With the economy so weak, school budgets have been cut to the bare minimum.

There is no money for large expenditures like quality reading books. Your donation will help my young readers to get a strong academic start and will empower them to call themselves "readers"! Since reading happens in all content areas it is key to academic success through high school and beyond. Your gift has the power to influence the lives of my students forever, as well as the lives of students in years to come.
