Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first-grade students are ages six to seven. My students are creative, compassionate, and eager to learn. They are able to set goals and achieve them. They learn from direct instruction, from each other, hands-on activities, teamwork, and by asking questions.
They are full of potential and ready to discover their abilities!
Being an educator is a big job. As we all know a teacher wears many hats to foster the learning of our students academically and emotionally. As a teacher, we are given opportunities to encourage our little ones to meet their goals, but we are also given the opportunity to empower their mindset.
My Project
You can find magic when reading books! My first graders read independently to increase their reading stamina, comprehension, and vocabulary. They select books based on their book level and interest. During their independent reading time, my students are selecting a variety of fiction and nonfiction books.
Reading comfortably stimulates the mind and children's imagination.
The seat cushions will allow my students to read freely in the classroom. They will be able to relax and enjoy reading in their favorite spot and change positions as needed. Knowledge is power and books are full it. Through books, my students can enrich their minds and when they come across a word they don't know how to sound out they can easily write it on sticky notes and then conference with the teacher to build reading foundational skills. Also, students can jot down questions and words they don't know the meaning of. The ultimate goal of using sticky notes is for my students to stop and think about what they are reading. To think about the specific reading strategies we are learning in class, making connections, questioning, and visualizing as they read.
