Reader's Theater: Young Actresses and Actors of America

My students need 3 flip cameras to film and create plays during their reading intervention class which will allow them to work in groups and produce stimulating projects.

My Students

I will never forget one of my group projects I completed in grade school. As a group, we had to research a famous person and use a video recorder to film and create an interview. We had to dress up and role play. As a teacher, I hope to implement similar projects and opportunities to my students.

The students involved in the reading intervention program are 5th and 6th grader who struggle with reading fluency, reading comprehension and written expression.

The students are significantly below grade level. Some students enrolled are students with specific learning disabilities and have current Individual Education Plans (IEP). The goals written in the Ep's are specific to reading fluency, reading comprehension and written expression. Despite the struggles of all the students, they are hard working, supportive of each other and enjoy working together during projects.

My Project

I plan to use the flip cameras to provide the students with engaging and enjoyable opportunities that will encourage them to utilize their reading and writing skills. The students will first use pre-written reader's theater scripts to film group plays. The pre-written scripts will be an example and show the students how they should write and create plays. The students will have the opportunity to create their plays as a group. They will formulate characters, setting and a story line. I plan to also provide students with other projects such as creating interviews, news reports and commercials.

Being provided flip cameras, the students will have the chance to produce projects that enable them to employ a variety of their reading and written expression skills.

They students will be exposed a wide range of real-life situations where they will need to use the skills they learn in school. The projects will encourage the students take accountability in their learning as well as show them that learning can be fun.
