Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How important was the speaking part of your class in the school pageant? So important, that your class spent hours practicing fluency and memorizing the lines. This requires everyone to have a play or a copy, but the associated expense requires students to share. This limits their access to the material.

The majority of the students who attend our school speak English as a second language or do not speak academic English at home.

When these students improve their reading fluency, they improve reading comprehension and writing skills. Students are inspired to research subjects for more information to create and perform their own plays. Ours has been a program improvement school in the past. Creative programs that have engaged the students on levels in every subject have inspired students to love education, improve their academic performance, and become lifelong learners. The students and the school have made great improvements and strive to attain even higher academic goals.

My Project

Our school produces several pageants each year. The students in the performances and audience are inspired to participate at the pageant's end. I want to capture this enthusiasm and create more opportunities for students to read fluently, speak fluently, and retain information. A document camera will allow the class to share material without the expense of individual copies or copying. Students will be able to see the document at the same time, choral read, and follow along all the parts of the story or play. The communal environment created by reading together will help apprehensive students gain the confidence to read aloud and be relaxed enough to comprehend what they have read. The document camera will allow the sharing of unique items associated with a particular story or play, and student offerings such as poems, ar,t or plays they have produced. For younger students, living examples generated when they initiate an assignment will help them conceptualize the project better.

Reading fluency and comprehension are the cornerstones of education.

Comfort with reading enables students to concentrate on content. When students can focus more on comprehension than on mechanics, they develop a relaxed relationship with education which facilitates learning. Our students have challenges with reading, writing and speaking English. The more opportunities offered them to develop these skills in an exciting and entertaining environment, the better their acquisition and achievement.
