My Students

In Reader's Theater, students sing a song or nursery rhyme, read a poem, or play a game. Then the students interact with some sort of literature. They get to act out some parts of a story and work on their fluency while they do so.

My students are amazing from Pre K thru 4th Grade.

We are a school in our 3rd year of existence and have really created a beautiful school for them to learn in. Our leader is committed, as are all of us, to bring each enriching experience to them if we can not get them out to experience them in the world. We are in a challenging district. Though our children have challenging situations at home and in their neighborhood, they full participate in their learning. Most of our school receives free lunch which means that we have high poverty conditions. SOme of our students do need a lot of social emotional support. We have many services brought to our school to immerse our children in a safe, nurturing environment. They have choice and voice in their learning. It helps to have many resources so they do have plentiful opportunities to choose from and discuss.

My Project

Reader's Theater needs to function like an actual performing area at times. As a teacher, I must create lessons on my own and it can be very challenging without supplies. It can also get costly. The children would be using the puppet theater to put on parts of stories or plays. Ideally, each table would have a puppet theater BUT this would be a great start. The bean bags would serve to start a collection of them so students can sit and act out their parts. Finally, the puppets would help the scholars carry out their parts. They would learn to put on their skits in groups. They would also learn to change their voice according to their puppet/character. Also, they would learn to tell who is speaking and when. Stories lend themselves to Reader's Theater opportunities! Scholars bringing their books to life, help with comprehension and with their fluency.

The donations will improve my classroom by bringing it to true life.

This will be the start of a true theater feel. This set of supplies would ideally be multiplied so more groups can put on their skits simultaneously. In addition, the supplies will help children who may be shy as they present. Currently scholars may put on a skit but with no support other than just the text. Reader's Theater is one way to truly get any child to practice their fluency as they read.
