As an 8th grade special education teacher in Brooklyn, NY, I am constantly searching for ways to improve and better my instructional practice on behalf of my students. This year, as part of a new way I am setting up my classroom, instruction in literacy will be based on "centers," meaning: students will rotate around the room during our 90-minute literacy block in order to gain skills related to their needs. My students require a lot of individualized attention. They struggle with a range of physical, emotional, and learning disabilities, and have academic skill levels from 1st - 7th grade. Many of their individualized educational plans (IEPs) indicate that they need support in building reading fluency. To address this need, one of my "centers" this year will be targeted specifically at improving reading fluency of my students. One way that I would like to meet my students' fluency needs is through Readers' Theater. Readers' Theater are sets of plays that are written according to various grade levels. Students read aloud their part in the play, using correct intonation, reflection, phrasing, and pausing. Reading aloud in a fun, interacting, exciting way also makes practicing fluency more engaging, especially for my reluctant readers. I am really looking forward to incorporating Readers' Theatre into my classroom this year. As many of my students have ambitious goals relating to fluency, I need to do everything in my power to help them meet those goals.
