My Students

My 6th grade classroom is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. We have everything from custom single family homes to government housing complexes. Our school is lucky enough to serve families from all over the world. Our neighborhood is diverse, but we are able to work together to succeed.

Despite their socioeconomic differences, my students work diligently to create class unity and ensure that everyone feels equal when they step into our classroom.

These students are conscientious and committed, willing to use their brains and solve problems! They have overcome incredible challenges in their personal lives; everything from moving to a new country without knowing the language to the sorrow of divorce, from extreme poverty to racial stereotyping. These young people are choosing to find positive ways to handle the hardships they face.

My Project

Students will be able to read engaging books in a book-club format in my classroom. Reading the same book as other students will create an environment in which we are able to collaborate and examine the texts more thoroughly. Having multiple copies of a variety of texts will allow my students the opportunity to create meaningful relationships with these quality books, with each other, as well as with the written word itself.

I will be able to differentiate my students' lessons by interest as well as level.

We will have deep discussions about those texts because others will see things from a different perspectives and we will be able to learn to appreciate and value each other as individuals with much to add to each others' learning.

My students will be able to socialize - this is crucial when so much of their conversations are digital. They will learn to listen carefully to others, to look people in the eye while speaking to them, and to form complete thoughts into comprehensible sentences.

The most important benefit of this project is that it will create excitement about reading! When we can get our students excited about reading, we open up a world of possibilities for them.
