Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come to school excited to learn. Although they face many obstacles outside of school, they have made incredible academic gains thanks to their hard work and the work of their amazing teachers. My school works hard to inspire the love of reading in our students, but there is a missing component that we need help addressing. This component is representation in our library. This is my first year working with this collection, and it is clear that it needs greater cultural, racial, and economic representation in the resources is needed.

Our students deserve to see their own lives reflected in the pages of our library books.

The books selected for a library show what is valued, and currently, our collection lacks books with main characters who are people of color and books that relate to the lived experiences of our students.

Greater representation in our library collection is good for all students. Books can transport readers into the world of the story and help all readers develop the skill of empathy for others. It's this ability and willingness to understand the perspectives of others that is needed in our world now more than ever.
