My Students

Imagine a class of engaged readers who can read their "just right" books and then turn and talk to their partners about what they read. Books need to be available and leveled. By labeling the books, students will be able to make book choices according to their interests.

I love teaching my third graders this year!

They are eager to learn about the things around them. They love to read non-fiction, as well as fiction, books. Their writing is developing and will continue to develop this year, as they discover the author's purpose, make connections to their own lives and write book recommendations to other students at school and their pen pals across the city. Our small public school is the best kept secret in a northern California city. We are surrounded by many diverse cultures and many ethnic restaurants. These third graders thrive on new experiences and care deeply about connecting with all aspects of their community. Our class is a caring community, where students respect each others feelings and take pride in having empathy. Building friendships and having fun learning together is a daily occurrence.

My Project

My students need bins of leveled books J to T, Fiction and Nonfiction, that are "just right," according to their reading level. Students will have a ten minute mini lesson on a daily skill. Then students will apply that skill to their own "just right" book that they have chosen. As they read, they will think deeply about what they read and prepare to write in their reader's notebook. Partners will share these writings as a way to start the conversation about what they read and what they have learned from the reading. Various conversations will build to a whole class discussion, perhaps relating author's purpose or story elements. These conversations, stemming from each student's "just right" book chosen from these books, will be successful because each student's book is at his/her reading level. Students will be prepared not only to show what they know on reading and writing assessments, but they will be prepared to love reading and writing as a way to better know themselves and others.

Readers are leaders.

When the students can see their place in the class, their place as part of the school community, their place in a loving family, their place in their city and their place in the world around them, they develop the confidence and skills needed to become leaders. These bright students are our future leaders and their superb foundation of reading, writing and speaking skills will ensure their success as they communicate in any city in which they live.
