Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in Bridgeport, Connecticut and are energetic, bright and avid readers. They enjoy class discussions, especially those that revolve around books.
Although there are some that struggle and have difficulty finding a book that will sustain their interest, their effort and enthusiasm are admirable.
Last year, I was fortunate to have this same group of students for a different course. We often talked about how they would be able to choose their own reading material in twelfth grade English. Their enthusiasm was a source of encouragement for me.
The first week of school, I passed out a list of 101 titles for young adults. I asked them to star the books they would want to see in the classroom library. They collaborated as a group to develop the list, which was comprised of novels revolving around teens in urban neighborhoods, as well as those with adolescent issues as the conflict.
My Project
Lifelong readers choose the books they read and in order to set my students on that track, they choose their own books. Therefore, I am creating a "Reader's Paradise" for them by providing them with access to a variety of titles and genres chosen by them.
Reader's Workshop will be the start of each class.
Students will read their books independently for thirty minutes and then there will be time for a variety of activities that include responding to reading, book talk within a group and conferencing with me. Through this process, students will practice reading strategies and have engaging discussions with their peers.
