My Project
Our Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) program serves k-6 students with the highest behavioral needs in the our district. Our students often face challenges rooted in unstable home environments, past trauma, and undiagnosed disabilities. At their previous schools, behavioral interventions were often prioritized over academics, leaving them significantly behind, especially in reading.
Our current library is filled with outdated and damaged books collected from “donate” or “discard” piles from other schools, and their condition and content often results is frustration and disengagement.
Our goal is to change how are students view reading by stocking our shelves with a diverse and captivating collection of high interest, low reading level books that better mirrors our students' interests and encourages curiosity. By updating our library, we can create a space that supports the development of literacy skills, positive self-esteem, and a love of reading.
The impact of theses new books will be significant. Students will become more engaged in reading, develop stronger literacy skills, and gain confidence as they connect with books that resonate with their lives. Beyond improving literacy, this project will empower our students, helping them to imagine brighter futures and achieve their full potential.
