My school has an amazing mix of cultures that give a very global feel to our hallways and classrooms. Our learning community has a variety of learning levels and English proficiency levels throughout each classroom. We have dedicated, hardworking parents, and community members who truly want success for each and every student.
Our students are innovative and creative individuals who are willing to think outside the box to show academic growth.
They approach challenges with a positive attitude and are continually supporting each other in their academic endeavors. Our students are respectful of each other's differences and embrace the diversity around them.
My Project
I have many emerging readers who really love the "Elephant and Piggie" books, by Mo Willems. The books are relatable and engaging! The characters go on adventures where they play with new friends, encounter someone who is sad, and learn new things like dancing. Student love how the character's dialogue is presented in talking bubbles throughout the book. This allows for easy reading with a partner, as well.
Teachers really love that these books have repetition throughout the story to help with sight words and fluency.
You can hear students giggling as they encounter Piggie and Elephant being silly. The books also have new and challenging vocabulary words, as well.
These books will be added to our book collection for individual book boxes. Students switch out books on a weekly basis and are always in need of new texts to pique their interests. These books add a new series to our book circulation. Students read from their book boxes daily for at least 30 minutes so we go through a large volume of books in a unit.
