My students are eager, curious, active, and outgoing. They love to learn, they come to school excited, and they are constantly growing. In addition to all of their amazing qualities, my students are also multilingual and many of them are immigrants from all over the world. There are over 6 languages spoken in my classroom and more than 50 languages spoken every day in our school!
I have students that come to my classroom knowing not a word of English, but they are held to the same standards of middle-class American students.
Despite poverty and language barriers, my students are constantly growing and learning. They are expected to face every obstacle thrown their way, but with only a limited number of resources.
My Project
Kids are always looking up to someone for a role model and example and I want to give my students the best role models I can through literature. This set of biographies will provide my students the opportunity to learn about strong women and men from all backgrounds. As we move into our biography and nonfiction unit, these books will arrive just in time to open so many doors that were previously closed to them.
I want my students to know that there are people from all over the world, from all language and cultural backgrounds, from poverty and wealthy families, and that no matter what, they achieved their dreams.
These books will give my students the opportunity to read and learn about people who succeeded no matter what barriers they had to overcome. Providing kid-friendly books about men and women from diverse backgrounds shows my students they can do anything they set their minds to!
