My Project

Our 11th graders need a full class novel that is accessible to a wide range of reading levels, engaging, relevant to modern life, and quick-paced-- all while providing our students with important knowledge and history. Maus (Vol. 1) has all of that and more! Maus is a first-hand account of the Holocaust told from the perspective of a survivor and his son. Today, many of our students know little to nothing about the horrors of the Holocaust and all the lessons it can teach us; Maus makes this knowledge both more interesting and less scary. One way it makes it easier for students to handle learning about the Holocaust is by using animal symbolism in the visuals. For example, in the novel, the Nazis are depicted as cats, the Polish are depicted as pigs, and Jewish people are depicted as mice. It is a timeless story with much to offer to a young audience.

Also, graphic novels have been proven to be extremely beneficial to students (especially reluctant readers)!

In fact, they help foster a love of reading and the presence of illustrations helps aid visual and verbal literacy. There are countless benefits to reading graphic novels for children and adults alike. Some of these benefits include enhancing comprehension and vocabulary, providing diverse representation and deep emotional connection more easily, and-- according to a Standfor historian-- even accelerating critical thinking. Historian Tom Mullaney said, "Historical graphic novels can provide students a nuanced perspective into complex subjects in ways that are difficult, and sometimes impossible, to characterize in conventional writing and media."

This novel is a fantastic, impactful, high-interest text that our students would all benefit from!
