Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of my students have limited access to reading material and resources, making us a Title I school, meaning most students cannot afford to get necessary resources and materials on their own. I strive to provide students with what they need in order for them to feel like they can be successful. One of the many things I do is show students different resources to enhance their reading and writing skills. I love that my students are getting more excited about reading this year; especially because they are learning that they have a choice in what they read. As my students are so diverse, I want them to have access to books that interest them and provide knowledge and understanding of other cultures that are different from their own while also providing appropriate materials.
These books will be used to offer reader choice in book clubs during the implementation of the HMH Literacy curriculum.
These books offer diverse ways to engage students in choice-driven reading selection.
Analyzing and discussing these experiences in Book Clubs (small group discussions and interactive activities/projects) will help students develop empathy and perspective, as well as connect to different cultures in our world.
When students are interested in what they read, they become more engaged in their learning. That is my goal as an educator: to explore and engage students in the many adventures of reading in order to apply and learn essential skills. Not only will they gain perspectives and experiences from reading these books, but students will also gain important collaboration skills through learning how to positively participate with their group and practice effective speaking and listening skills.
