My students need more books in our classroom library that are more culturally diverse, that will help us learn about men and women who have changed the world, and will help us with social skills!
Our school is located in a lower-to-middle class neighborhood, and most of the five hundred plus students are able to walk or ride their bikes. There are several after-school programs available to enrich student lives. Our school is in the process of becoming an integrated arts academy, which is a very exciting time that will allow children to learn in a variety of ways. By giving the students a variety of ways of learning, they are able to express themselves, their creativity, and learn in the best way that works for them!
My Project
After teaching for a few years, I have learned from my students that they are continually surprised to learn about men and women of all ages who are standing up for what they believe in. I have put together this list of books that I know will help to excite and inform my students about people across the world, young and old, that are inventors, activists, and artists.
My school is becoming an Arts Integrated school which means we strive to incorporate all of the different art forms into our daily learning!
I want to have another way that my students can learn about artists that we may have talked about or that they learned about in art! I have found books about musicians, artists and more!
The last group of books I have picked out are books that focus on different social skills topics. Using pictures books to help teach curriculum is great but using them to start conversations about bullying, following directions and being kind is even better!
