Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from homes in which they have limited access to quality literature. Because they have such few books, they love being able to read the stories in our classroom library.

I work in a low-income, urban public school.

My students come from working-class families, many of whom came to this country looking for a better life for their children. These parents rely on me and my classroom to help their children achieve the "American Dream." I know that instilling a love of reading is what will help these students achieve their dreams.

My Project

My students absolutely love to read. They eagerly complete assignments, hoping to visit the classroom library to select a book to read. They also love engaging in DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time, so they can delve in to books. As it stands, it takes them so long to choose a book due to the lack of organization in our library. I would love to be able to organize my library in to different genres and categories so that students can go straight to those topics that they enjoy reading about. This will result in efficiency, and additional time spent actually reading, rather than just searching for the perfect book.

I have been waiting years to be able to organize my library, and can't wait to see the look on their faces when their cherished books are categorized in color-coded bins, and have labeled stickers on them.

I just know their eyes will light up and inspire an even greater love of reading in these young children. After all, readers are leaders, and leaders are readers. These students WIll grow up to be leaders....with your help!
