Help me give my students books on their level to foster their love of reading including books that match their interest and hobbies such as dinosaurs, super heroes and dancing, as well as dry-erase pockets and chair bands.

My Students

Most of my students come from low-income families; several are from a group home for temporary foster children and about a third of my students are minorities.

My first graders are eager readers; they act as "sponges" and I want to feed their curiosity with high-interest books and materials while they are excited about reading.

Many of my students do not have the advantage of traveling to different places or seeing special events like those I saw when I was growing up; so I try to bring the world outside into my classroom through reading--using books that will stretch their imagination and experiences.

My Project

In my 1st grade classroom, I am focused on helping my students fall in love with books and become independent readers. I have all levels of readers, so I need all levels of books for them to read. My goal is to increase their reading level at least one grade level.

My students need to have lots of books that they are able to read and that are of high interest.

Students often fall in love with a reading character and want to read more of their books.(ex: super heroes). I choose books that I know my students love and want to read more about. I also added a few math related materials, to increase interest in the math centers for my classroom. In order to help with the student's focus, I added chair leg socks that will keep the room's noise level while the students are working and reading.
