I teach at a middle school in South Louisiana. Because we are an ESL (English as a Second Language) school, my students, a group of about 70 students, come from very diverse backgrounds. The mix of students is what makes our school unique. Each student brings something special to the classroom, which provides learning opportunities for diversity and acceptance.
Reading can be a challenge for some of my students especially if one has a learning disability such as dyslexia or if one is learning English as a second language.
I would like to help my students by providing books for them to read from different cultures and different reading levels.
My Project
Readers are leaders....so I want to instill the importance of reading in my students. Every year my goal is to get my students reading. This year the challenge is greater because I want to encourage them to read nonfiction, an uncommon choice among middle school students. Test scores have shown a weakness in comprehending informational text. My students need to improve their ability to read and comprehend informational text, but our selection of nonfiction books is pretty slim.
I would like to provide a bigger selection of nonfiction books so that my students will become more comfortable reading informational text and increase their knowledge about historical people, places, and events while exposing them to different cultures.
Of course, I want them to enjoy reading as well, so I would like to purchase some new fictional novels, which were requested by my students. Love that!
In addition, I'm asking for a laminator and paper cutter for my classroom to set up our data tracking bulletin board for our Accelerated Reading program. Students will track their reading progress throughout the year.
