My Students

Have you ever wanted to do something but struggled to learn the task? That is how many of my young third graders feel about reading. They are eager to read, still enjoy the world of books, but are beginning to find reading too difficult to stick with it. I want to help them before it is too late.

We are a class of enthusiastic 3rd graders and a fun-loving teacher that find learning exciting!

They are like little sponges absorbing EVERYTHING I can teach them, and finding new things to learn on their own and from each other. We work & learn together in a Title I school with a very high percentage of students and families living in low income homes. Our school has a large group of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students. While poverty and language can present big barriers for students, we are learning not to let our challenges get in the way of learning or loving life. I strive each day to help my students find joy in their lives and in being together and learning. Our class is a wonderful place to be!

My Project

The learning materials you will help me obtain include books of poetry and readers' theater passages that I can copy and use in the classroom as well as send home for extra practice. These types of reading materials help build students' fluency- the speed, voice, phrasing of a good reader. The more fluently a reader is able to read a passage, article, book, etc. the more he/she understands and remembers what they read. Fluency and comprehension are what it's all about! The learning games will help my students practice both these skills in fun, engaging ways and keep the learning both meaningful and enjoyable for the students. These materials will be used in small group reading lessons, for children to perform for their classmates, as homework assignments where they can read to family members, and in learning stations in the classroom where they will practice all these important skills.

Third grade is such a pivotal year!

The students are either beginning to really soar in their reading and learning or they are beginning to truly fall behind. Reading affects all other learning areas as we read to understand the world around us in science and social studies, we read to understand word problems in math, we read as we write... Reading is a CRUCIAL piece of what we do! Please help me as I help my struggling readers. I do NOT want to lose one student!
