Help me give my students a classroom library filled with children's literature about musical styles, musicians, composers, and instruments right at their fingertips.
My students attend a large elementary school, with a student population of roughly 650 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They love making music, composing music, and moving to music.
My students are also avid readers who love learning through books.
While most of the learning in our music class takes place through active music making, books serve as an inspiration for creating soundscapes, as beautifully illustrated versions of songs and finger plays my students know, and as introductions to a world of amazingly resilient and creative musicians and composers from throughout history. My students can’t get enough of the books I read to them during music class.
My Project
Creating a music classroom library will give my students the opportunity to continue their music learning through reading individually and in small groups.
This classroom library will provide students with a never ending opportunity to learn about music through a wealth of beautiful and fun children's literature.
The requested books are illustrated songs, biographies and autobiographies of musicians and composers from many genres of music, stories of how musical styles emerged and developed, and of how innovative musicians created new instruments. They cover an array of musical styles and reading levels. This would be the first installment of an amazing classroom resource for my students.
When my students want to know more about a topic or have a question they are seeking an answer to, we can go to our classroom library together to try to find an answer. When testing requires us to have nearly silent music class, students can partner up and have choice in the composer, musical artist, genre, instrument, or song they read about together. When students finish their work at different paces, those who finish earlier can read with their group-mates while their peers finish the original assignment. On rare occasions when I am ill and absent from school, reading books from our classroom library can be one of the activities in the rotation of the sub plans. These books will give students the opportunity to learn with peers through reading and give them the choice of which musical topic they would like to learn about.
