Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of students that our title 1 school serves are from low-income/high poverty families. Each day they are faced with challenges both in and out of school. I strive to make my classroom a safe place for all my students, where their creativity and independence as learners are fostered daily.
My students are eager to learn and come to school each day ready to explore and investigate in our classroom setting.
They love to listen to stories, create, sing songs and dance. Many of my students are learning English as a second language, and we also use American Sign Language to allow students to have a total physical response when learning new words. Research has shown there is a 33 million word gap for students living in poverty versus those who are not. Knowing this, my goal each day is to make sure my students are involved in meaningful conversation and in a language rich environment. I hope to meet all the needs of my students through creating a safe, creative, language rich, and exciting classroom where my students develop a true love for learning.
My Project
I have been working on developing an enriched literature and writing program in my TK/K classroom. There are three main categories of items that would be really beneficial for my students.
My students need access to leveled readers so they are able to practice the reading skills they are learning daily.
Right now there are only a few readable books for my students to read in our classroom library. They are able to read the pictures in many books, but I would love for them to be able to read short decodable books on their own. The Bob Books, Scholastic Readers, and I Can Read books will help to meet this need.
My students are also in need of great literature that can be used during instruction of reading and writing. I have carefully chosen books, like "Ralph Tells a Story" and "The Night of the Veggie Monster," that go along with our Language Arts themes and connect with our writing program. These texts will serve as mentor texts and we will use them to look at how we can be writers just like the authors of the books.
Last, my students are in need of a pocket chart and pocket chart stand. This will be beneficial for them as we will be able to look closely at different editing skills, writing skills, and reading skills. The students will also be able to easily access information with this wonderful tool. My students will greatly benefit from each and every one of the items included in this project.
