Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students deserve an opportunity to fall in love with and engage with history as a vehicle for understanding their own worlds, rather than getting fed a dusty list of dates and wars. And who needs to enjoy what they're learning more than ESL students, for whom school is so often a frustrating and overwhelming experience? I teach at a public school with an international focus that serves high-need students, many of whom are recent immigrants from all over the world. I teach World History to students in the 10th grade who have been designated ESL (learning English as a Second Language) students. Essentially, the majority of my students are struggling with learning history and English at the same time, and I am responsible for building these students' English skills as I teach them the history content that they need to pass state exams and graduate from high school.
A major challenge to this endeavor is finding an appropriate history text. The books my school has now are out-of-date hardcover books that students are not allowed to take home. While the content is fine, the language is dense and unreadable for many of my students, not to mention fairly sleep-inducing even for me. To be honest, it's quite a challenge to put my students in a good position to pass the very linguistically demanding state exam for world history at the end of the 10th grade; having an essentially incomprehensible history text doesn't facilitate learning for either History or English.
The text I need your help to acquire, "The Story of the World," is a fantastic telling of content at a lower reading level and in storytelling form--which makes the history understandable and entertaining for all. I spent much of last year photocopying these texts to supplement in-class reading, but the ideal situation is for each student to have their own copy to take home to read and mark up freely.
Your support can give my students access to a world where everything is interesting and where nothing is more important than finding out what happens next in the story. Your help means that my students have a chance to read on their own, understand the content needed to graduate from high school, and with a little bit of luck, learn to enjoy learning.
