Readable Books for Multilingual Teens

My students need classroom sets of books they can and want to read. These books have vibrant illustrations, and are about topics that are interesting to teenagers who are emergent readers in English.

My Students

My students are beginning English language learners. They come from over ten different countries, and speak many different languages. For some of them, English is the fourth language they know!

Although they are new to our school and America, they are teenagers, and they need access to books about topics that are interesting to them.

Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds want to read about science, history, geography, and other topics that aren't covered in typical books designed for beginning readers. Although my students are still learning English, many of them are highly educated and proficient students in one or more other languages. Even the students whose prior education has been interrupted, which has affected their literacy in all languages, should be able to read about something they find interesting as adolescents. They need access to reading materials that are respectful of this aspect of their identities.

My Project

My students need interesting, visually appealing books that capture their attention and entice them to keep reading. They need classroom sets, so they can collaborate with classmates as they read and construct meaning from books.

These classroom sets of nonfiction books are vibrantly illustrated, and culturally sensitive.

They are designed to support English language learners in developing their vocabulary and comprehension skills, as well as decoding in English. The books are about science and social studies topics that adolescents can relate to the content they are learning in high school. Having multiple copies of each title allows my students to read and discuss their reading together, while each having a book of their own.
