Help me give my students three iPads for a wider range of literacy options through matching their reading levels and interests with thousands of books on apps!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in a neighborhood in which the population is heavily minority oriented. More than 95% of our school population is Hispanic, meaning that a lot of these students speak Spanish at home. These are first/second generation students primarily from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, or Mexico. In addition, most of them are part of the free or reduced-price lunch program, primarily the former. My students love exploring books, which is why I dream of providing a large variety of books for them through the easy access of technology. They enjoy music, art, dance, adventures, which are all accessible topics in books!
After teaching for 10 years total, 5 at the Kindergarten level, I have learned that each parent has the same devotion and desire for their children to have the same learning opportunities as other, more privileged families.
I also learned that young students pick up on languages easier than others, which is why capitalizing on this moment is vital. Now is the time to entertain and encourage their eagerness to learn, because my Kindergartners are at the age in which learning both languages are the easiest and most exciting for them!
My Project
Being the Spanish component of a dual language program for Kindergarten students in New York City has been both the most wonderful, and challenging job. There is something to be said about allowing students to learn and understand different subjects in both English and Spanish, while bettering their Spanish language skills. However, it’s tough to provide a wide range of Spanish language literacy options when there is very limited access to Spanish books. We are requesting three iPads for a wider range of literacy options through matching students' reading levels and interests with thousands of books on apps!
The difference in options in English literacy and Spanish literacy is vast, but all students deserve to experience the same unlimited adventures!
With that, the technology provided to us can really benefit all language speaking students!
My students are incredibly different, with various passions, dreams and distinct thoughts; which could all be potentially encouraged and supported by Spanish language books that they are more able to identify and connect with. Access to iPads can provide books with different topics and genres to keep them engaged and excited about the Spanish language and the literacy I know there is to offer.
Since there are limited printed and hardcover Spanish picture books and texts in the classroom, I depend on the internet and apps specifically made for reading and literacy based on school curriculum. With access to the technology I kindly ask for donations for, my students can utilize the iPads and rotate in groups to read the hundreds of thousands of Spanish books online, to hear Spanish audiobooks for struggling readers, and to keep up with the latest books in current events, and more.
