Read World Adventures
My students need 30 copies each of Super Science magazine and Scholastic News magazine.
"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students with your help will be able to apply this mantra in the work they do in our classroom. With subscriptions to these magazines students will be see the issues we are facing politically, socially, and environmentally.
My students are high achievers lacking access to financial resources.
They are dreamers and activists that with your help may be the change they wish to see in the world. The students in my classroom represent the changing diversity in our society today. Many of them do not have access to reading materials in the home and they would benefit from having a magazine to take home to practice comprehension strategies they are learning in the classroom and to have thoughtful discussions with their family as they reflect on their learning.
Last year with the help of a donor, students were able to use these resources for many purposes. Students used magazines to respond to reading. They wrote current event reflections that allowed them to practice summarizing, reflecting, and questioning. Additionally, students made connections between articles that they had read, across all curricular areas. As a teacher, my heart sang to watch my students clap when we received our subscriptions and to see them fully engaged in reading their magazines from cover to cover.
This resource has the ability to change a student's life.
Reading is a part of what we do every day. Help Instill in my students a love of reading and help me ensure we are developing students who have an awareness and empathy for our global community.
