My Students
The students I work with range from ages 14 to 22. They are young adults preparing to enter the real world upon graduation and contribute to their community and families as independently as possible. These wonderful young men and women have moderate disabilities that affect their ability to participate in academics with non-disabled peers, and need multiple exposures to a single concept before achieving mastery.
My students are eager to learn and create.
In order for them to learn new skills, they need individualized instruction that is tailored to meet their unique needs. This instruction must go beyond the surface of paper-pencil rehearsal but include repetitive, multi-modal tasks that allow them to interact with the content.
Although my students learn differently with unique academic goals, their life goals are much like their general peers. They aspire to be included in community and recreational activities, to work gainfully and to have successful relationships with their family and friends. Your contribution to our project will enhance their readiness with academic and vocational skills along with increasing their individualized learning opportunities.
My Project
Students in my classroom are capable of learning new, challenging skills in all areas. Reading can be especially frustrating for my students and they need creative and high-interest ways to rehearse their language skills. The games, learning centers and table top reading activities in this project will provide them with socially inspired ways to increase word identification, word tense, story telling, letter sounds, comprehension and so many other critical reading skills.
Increasing a persons ability to read expands their independence and opportunities for the rest of their life.
Cooperative games allow students to be engaged socially while simultaneously benefiting their academic growth. Reading is a fundamental skill that benefits student comprehension in all academic areas, employment scenarios and daily living skills. Thank you for supporting this literacy-focused project.
