I am a first grade teacher beginning my second year of teaching. During my first year, I had 19 students and 55 percent of those students received free lunches. I received no funds to build a classroom library. The other first grade teachers gave me extra books from their classrooms, but many were not leveled. I purchased a small amount of leveled books with my personal funds and have purchased discarded books from the public library and from yard sales. All the first grade teachers have implemented the 100 Book Club program. Students take home a leveled book and their reading log in a plastic bag. The student reads to the parent and the parent signs the log. When the student returns the book, another one is sent home. The students love this program, especially the ones who don't have access to many books at home. My students were gradually able to increase their reading levels and enjoyed valuable time with their parents in the process. Near the end of school, some of my students ran out of books to read because their levels had increased significantly. I would like to be able to provide them with a greater selection of literature. I am asking for leveled books for my classroom library, so my students will be able to check them out and take them home to read with a parent.
