My students attend a public charter school serving students grades k thru 8th. Students not only are assigned a language in kindergarten in either French, Spanish, or Mandarin, they also learn through inquiry based and project based models.
Since most students arrive without prior knowledge in the target language, it is like they are going through the ELL model only in reverse.
Our students are highly motivated individuals. They are eager to dive into learning everyday and they work hard to strive in not only English, but also their target language. The goal is for each student to leave this school, not only literally fluent, but also become globally minded citizens.
My students will benefit greatly if they are able to see what's written on paper or in a book. With the document camera, I will now be able to project the texts onto a screen and students can follow along a lot more efficiently. It is a basic technology tool that we have been lacking in our classroom.
Lots of hands on games and materials will be well protected if the materials are printed on card stock and laminated.
A lot of science, math, and Mandarin materials will be a lot more eye catching if they are in color instead of black and white, too.
