Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a language other than English at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social tasks challenging. Due to the fact that a significant number of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of students come from low-income households. My students work hard every day, and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!
My Project
During language therapy sessions, we spend a lot of time working with books and it's important for me to always have new ways to keep the students engaged while practicing important skills. My students learn best when they are actively engaged and having fun. The storytelling kits will provide my students with the visual support they need to be successful as well as the opportunity to use their hands while learning. The kits will allow my students to recall and retell stories and identify story elements using manipulatives. My students always get so excited when I pull out a story kit!
When I use interactive activities during therapy it leads to improved attention and retention of the skills; these materials will help support hands on learning!
In speech we also spend a lot of time working on phonemic awareness skills. It is often very difficult for my students, especially the students with learning disabilities, speech and language impairments and those that are learning English as a second language. The Power Pen cards, learn the alphabet dough mats and phonics flip cards will help my students work on improving their phonemic awareness skills, which is the foundation for reading. It also gives them the opportunity to engage in play while learning and gives them the chance to begin to be independent and work with their peers.
