This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Spanish dual-language classroom. This means that half of my students come from English speaking families while the second half of the class comes from Spanish speaking families. In the classroom, we speak both languages. Half of the day is devoted to instruction in English while the other half is devoted instruction in Spanish.
Not only do Spanish speaking students work in an environment where the home language is maintained, many English students are also given this wonderful opportunity to be immersed in another powerful language.
The school is considered Title 1 and is found is an relatively low-income neighborhood.
While these statistics are theoretically nice, one thing is for sure, we are bilingual and proud! With this being said, to ensure understanding on the both parts, be sure to pay attention to vowel teams.
My Project
The Teacher's College Unit in 2nd grade is heavily based on "Mentor Texts," or stories students can study to improve their own literacy. While the provided English texts are wonderful, in this dual language classroom, we need a Spanish equivalent. Students need to be able to see the skills they learn in English, in Spanish as well. This is to ensure equality of languages as well as equal access to learning for all.
We read high quality texts in English all of the time, so students need to see that there are these kinds of stories in their home language as well.
In order for this to be a successful dual-language classroom, my children need to have access to high-quality text in their native language. These engaging stories are meant to be read aloud to students and used as mentor texts to help my students improve their reading and writing in Spanish.
More than half of students from low‑income households
