I never knew how much teachers had to provide for their students until I became one and not just a general education teacher, but a bilingual one. I'm a first year bilingual ELAR kindergarten teacher and I must say when my coworkers told me the first year is all about survival, they weren't kidding!
The school I work at is classified as a low income public school.
I love waking up everyday and going to work to see the faces of my 5 year olds and how they love to tell me all about their adventures. I, in return, tell them about adventures through reading books. They LOVE being read to but unfortunately, as this is a bilingual class, finding Spanish books to read to them in their native language is hard! Because we are a low income school and our bilingual program isn't huge, our library is very limited in Spanish books. I have had to translate English books while I read to the students and it has been a hard task. I'm hoping that the books I'm requesting will be fulfilled so my students' learning will be enhanced.
My Project
Having the books I am requesting will serve as a great help not only to me, but to my students as well. During independent reading, my students will be given a variety of books to look through and read. On the other hand, I will be able to teach story elements and much more through these books. I believe my student's reading will accelerate and thus help them succeed!
There's nothing more difficult to young students to look at books to which they can't make out words.
(Due to language issues) That's why I took the initiative to translate books into Spanish. Bilingual learners should be provided with the same items as any other learner in their native language. I want my students to think back on their favorite book when they are older and mention a book that was read in my class. My favorite book read to me in elementary school was "Are You My Mother?" What's yours?
