This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dr. Seuss captured the significance of reading when he said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Reading is the skill that is going to open up a world of opportunities for my students.
Do you remember flipping through your favorite books and magazines as a child?
Did you prefer fiction or nonfiction? What genre of reading delighted you? I would like my students to be able to answer those questions when they're my age. My hope is to foster a love of reading a variety of genres (most notably nonfiction) within my students. They come from many different places because our school is a magnet school. Many of my students are from low-socioeconomic areas and don't have access to literature that will foster a love of reading. Plus, books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" are great, but they only challenge the mind so far. Reading is so essential to my students' success. They are so curious about the world but many of them don't quite understand that improving their reading skills will answer many of their questions (and generate even more!).
My Project
Time for Kids magazine is a wonderful resource that will provide fun, interesting nonfiction text for my students. If you think about what you actually read throughout the day, most of it is nonfiction or expository text. An understanding and enjoyment of nonfiction text is key for my students' success in reading. They can pick up a good fictional book anywhere. But finding nonfiction that peaks their curiosity is a challenge. Time for Kids does that in an amazing way! Plus, our reading curriculum (Treasures) utilizes pieces of TFK articles throughout their units and I'd like to enhance the nonfiction element even more with the entire magazine. My students will love it--guaranteed!
Being a successful reader opens doors in life.
I want my students to have as many opportunities in life as possible. Sir Richard Steele once said, "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” My students need that exercise! Please help enhance their reading skills by supporting my project. Thank you so much for your consideration!
