This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 5th grade in a low socio-economic neighborhood where the majority of students receive free lunch and uniforms. The environment around the school isn’t much to be desired. So - My goal - our goal is to refocus that attention by getting lost in a book. My students have experienced many things that 10 year olds should not have to but our hope is that through the love of reading along with our partnership with the after school program that we are able to shield our students away from the gangs, drugs and violence that plague their neighborhood and inspire them to do more and be more!
My Project
The materials for this project are to create a reading nook inside of our classroom. Students would be able to relax on the bean bags or plop down on a pillow and escape the classroom through their imagination and the creative writing of a book.
This space is necessary for my scholars because too often reading is looked at as a chore - but we are now changing the culture of reading and the stigma behind it.
Reading should be fun and with the right materials - it will be! My scholars will be able to grab a book and escape and it’s all thanks to you!
