Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty area, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Every child in our school receives free or reduced lunch, and a large percentage of students are considered homeless. Despite this, my students are excited to be part of a learning community where they feel safe and cared for.

Our classroom is an area where students are encouraged to work hard, collaborate with one another, and communicate clearly.

I encourage learning through exploration and value the intrinsic curiosity of my students.

My Project

My students need sand timers in small groups to allow them to be responsible for cleaning up and preparing for transitions to other stations. Transitions can be chaotic, and my students would benefit from a visual reminder of how much time they have left in a certain area. These timers will eliminate anxiety and uncertainty that can sometimes come with transitioning to new activities and areas.

Along with timers, I'm requesting stamps and ink to create a new and engaging center where students are given the opportunity to create words using phonetic spelling.

Students love to work with letters and sounds! Giving them the ability to explore these sounds in a creative way will boost engagement in our learning community.

Finally, I am request two sets of small-group dry-erase workbooks so my students can practice writing lowercase letters and numbers 1-20. These two skills are two of the most important foundational skills in kindergarten!
