My students need WhisperPhones to use within their classrooms. They are currently using them in my Dyslexia Group and I am seeing a lot of growth in their comprehension.
I currently teach and assess students identified with Dyslexia. As a teacher identified with dyslexia, I can acknowledge students' struggles in reading and writing. Currently, I have 25 students on my caseload that I will be servicing during the 2017-2018 school year. My students' abilities in reading, writing, spelling, and math vary widely due to their learning disability. The majority of my students have difficulty decoding the words they are reading despite having an average to above average intelligence.
I am the co-chair of my campus' Student Teacher Assistant Team (S.T.A.T) Committee.
On a bi-weekly basis, I help to identify students who are not successful in theses academic areas. Co-chairing this committee has helped us identify 2-3 students each year in first grade. In addition to working with students, I also work with teachers on an individual basis when they are concerned with a student to helping them identify students potentially showing indicators of dyslexia. This helps us identify an additional 2-3 students in the 3rd and 4th grade.
My Project
My students began using their Whisper phones in their Dyslexia groups as soon as our DonorsChoose box came in. In the last three weeks, I have seen a growth in my students' fluency and comprehension. I have been able to track their progress through a Reading Program called Istation, and their Small group books we read.
The goal of my project is to acquire more Whisper phones so each student I service has one in every class they attend.
IThe teachers are noticing the increased confidence in their reading and their comprehension rising when my students' can hear themselves read. They are better able to make corrections when they read a word wrong, and or add or take away words.
