Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 31 students, all of which are in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students' parents are very hard working proud parents that want a better education for their children. Many of my families attended this school themselves and feel a strong connection to the school community. My student' parents and I share a common goal which is to instill a love of reading. However, many of my families can't afford all the chapter books that I want to expose them to. I have students in my class who love reading chapter books and students who have never really read many chapter books and are curious to start, but don't know where to begin.
This is where I want to help them by having classroom sets of books that we read together and have discussions about life lessons, comprehension strategies, vocabulary, symbolism, historical connections, and community building.
Books that they find interesting to hook their engagement and teach through those mediums. Increasing my library of classroom sets will help me reach more students that I can teach the love of literacy through chapter books.
My Project
These materials will make a dynamic difference in my students' learning about history by reading biographies and historical fiction stories about the people during time periods we study in 5th grade. We will be using literature circles to analyze the information read in these books. The students will create novel studies to show their understanding .
These books will provide my students additional points of view to analyze the accounts of history that we are studying.
Having this project funded would put a copy of each book in the students hands to help them relive the important events of history.
