My Students
Wouldn't it be nice if students had books that could help them learn about sharing, different families, expressing feelings in appropriate ways, and the importance of being thankful and kind?
Our urban school is in a high poverty area and serves many low income families and students who are English language learners.
The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and 85% of them qualify for free/reduced price school lunch. My energetic, diverse class of Kindergarteners represent a plethora of cultures and linguistic backgrounds. My students are: Latino, Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, African American, Russian, mixed heritages- Korean/Caucasian, Filipino/Cambodian, and Filipino/Latino.
My Project
With our new collection of books in various categories such as feelings, families, sharing, rules, kindness, appreciation, sharing differences the students can learn about all these concepts. The books will provide colorful, stimulating visuals to help them understand and bring about deeper conversations and connections with these important life and emotional skills.
For many of my English language learners, just hearing an adult speak about feelings, rules, emotions, and families is so abstract.
With picture books and examples that are relatable in the books, the students can have a more concrete visual and image about these topics. These books will also be displayed and shared in our classroom library so that the students who are ready to read can read them and look at the pictures. The importance of books and reading is powerful!
