This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"I don't like reading. It's boring!" I hear this year after year.

My response is, "You just haven't found a book you love.

Let's find one!"

The majority of my students are developing readers, and many have admitted that they have never read a book in its entirety.

My classroom is home to students from diverse backgrounds; as first-generation high school students, most are acquiring English as a second language. My scholars also struggle to navigate the complex social tapestry, not only at school but in the US via social media. Yet, they show up to school, eager to learn.

Students do not pick up a book because they do not see their realities reflected in the literature they are asked to read. My goal is to provide culturally relevant literature to enhance the skills and lessons presented in class to help students develop a sense of self, help them feel connected to the world, and ultimately help them become agents of change in their community.

We must educate our children through the heart. This belief drives my instruction, especially the selection of literature. Students must see themselves in the books they read and write about at all skill levels.

Our reading and writing are grounded in essential questions that address issues impacting our communities.

My students are researchers, scholars, authors, scientists, and historians. The novels will help students explore various issues that impact young adults, especially the loss of language, the journey to find a home in this country, and the growth needed to feel comfortable in their own skin.

Students will explore how authors present similar issues through informational texts and literature. The goal is to guide students in exploring how the skills learned in class can influence and transform their lives and communities.
