My Students
As a teacher living in the same community of my students, I know first hand the experiences they face. It is a low-income, high/poverty area. The recent hurricane destroyed a unit of apartments where some of the students reside. Going home everyday with a pile of debris at the front door has to be devastating. Trying to cope with the added on problems of the hurricane can be overwhelming.
My students are also in a special education setting.
Some of these students were in my class last year and at the end of the year, they were given a bag of books to read over the summer. (totally destroyed) I am in the process of collecting more take home books for them. However, they will be left with the chance of no one reading to them.
One of my goals is to make the hours we spend together at school worthwhile. I can only imagine the peace and comfort they are not receiving at home. They are very low in reading and comprehension. The though of them not being able to read at home or having anyone read to them is a constant concern of mine.
My Project
My students need these books to improve their reading skills. Also, a different voice besides mine should be enlightening to them. They will receive reinforcement of daily sight words and expand their vocabulary. I love reading and have that same desire for my students. Their disability WILL NOT hinder their reading experience in my classroom.
Your generous donation to our project will improve our classroom by building strong readers.
The change that I am looking forward to in my scholars will ensure their success in reading. They WILL look forward to reading more each day. It will not matter if they are read to or if they are the ones doing the reading.
