Ms. Russ from Burns Flat OK is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Read to Love-Love to Read

My students need books in their classroom. I am a 1st year teacher in a low income district, and my students read on a 2nd to 3rd grade level. They need to love to read!

  • $300 goal

This project expired on February 7, 2012.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My Students

My students need some laughs! I have chosen some comical books that my kids can read because I doubt they get many laughs elsewhere! I am shooting for 100% A.R. goals this year, and a new found LOVE for reading. Please help us achieve this goal...laughter is the best medicine for the soul!

My school is low income, and the numbers have exceeded the building!

This rural area is mostly driven by the oil industry, but the kids come and go, as if they were migrant! I feel like a majority of my students come from broken, possibly abusive or neglected homes. I feel my job is to love them, and hope they can find a love or drive for education while with me this year. Our school library is the same size as our classroom, which limits the amount of books available. And due to lack of funds, the library is a bit 'behind the times' with their books. My goal with humorous books, is to have "book talks" and get these kids socializing about literature, rather than soap operas! They are excited to see if we get these books, and are preparing for their presentations already!

My Project

The humorous books will be a wonderful start to our classroom library! I can't wait to intrigue my students with the new titles and previews of the books. The books will help meet the lower reading levels that seem to be a majority in my class this year. We plan to hold a monthly "book talk" that will give each student a chance to showcase their favorite book from that month. THis is a perfect way to get all students interested in the joy of reading...and with this group, I think humor is just what they need.

My project is so important because I am a first year teacher that worked for two years to collect a library that is unfortunately over their reading level.

I assumed that 4th graders would read between 4-5th levels, but these guys are closer to 3rd! I feel it is important to meet them where they are at, and show them that reading is enjoyable and fun! I hope you will help me...help them! They are precious kids...with an amazing future ahead of them...if they would only reach out and grab it!
