My Students

Our school lies in a rural area between Dallas and Tyler, TX. While not faced with the same problems that children in larger cities face, 60% of my students are on free or reduced lunches. Many are never exposed to books anywhere but my classroom. While the district works diligently to provide technology for our students, I would love to put more actual books in the hands of these amazing kids-children whose faces light up at the idea of picking out a book from the classroom library.

Curiosity and a desire to learn are not characteristics reserved for those with the resources to satisfy these impulses.

My students have so much potential that we are never able to fully develop due to a lack of resources. These kids show just how versatile and diverse they are in the ways they approach and tackle new projects and ideas but all too often, they long for something less electric like the simple joys found in words written on paper. I am constantly surprised not only by their adaptability but by their ability to persevere often in the face of daunting challenges at home.

My Project

These books will be prominently featured in my classroom library to encourage not only reluctant readers but to encourage diverse choices of reading materials and expose my small-town students to a bigger world. The books I chose are books that will either help encourage reluctant readers to pick up a book or expose my students to different cultures.

Students will be led to choose diversity in their reading materials in order to increase not only their vocabulary but their background knowledge and ability to empathize with others.

I will help students recognize these novels by having students write reviews to encourage others to read these titles.
