My Students

My students are very diverse in their dreams, joys, frustrations and daily struggles . As I am new to this particular school, I am very familiar with its reputation in the area, which is unfair to them. The region considers them naughty, low in their abilities and out of control. Throughout the months I have worked in the school, I have found the opposite to be true and I want to provide them a variety of books to allow them to find a character in print in who they see themselves.

My Project

Reading is the number one way in which students develop literacy skills in the native language as well as in second and subsequent languages.

My students need a library with a wide variety of books in order to find books with which they can engage, learn and grow.

When students see themselves in the characters, the research is clear that they are more likely to be engaged and want to read. An engaged reader is acquiring language and literacy skills without realizing it.

We want to raise a generation of readers and thinkers. Exposure to a variety of narratives across subjects is a step in the right direction. I need help to make it happen!
