This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 8th-grade English Language Arts. My students have shown tremendous growth this year in reading!! Many started the year with Lexile levels that were 3-4 grades lower than where they should be. A key factor in their growth has been rewarding their effort with small prizes and treats. After I started rewarding their efforts, the number of articles increased, thus, raising their Lexile levels at a faster pace. Now that we are more than halfway through the year, my prizes/treats are depleted, and I need assistance replenishing the supply.
My classroom will be much more conducive to reading and achievement if we had more reading rewards as well as fluorescent light covers.
The fluorescent lights in our room create glare on the student computers. The light covers block the glare while keeping our room well-lit, thus creating a better reading environment.
Our ELA room is busy and there are often little pieces of paper trash on the carpet. A manual push-sweeper could be used to keep our room neat and clean! Our classroom printer is used to print school newsletters and posters which we hang on the door of our classroom to spread the word about sports, concerts, writing contests, and other school events. The ink refills will guarantee that we can keep printing the news.
