My Students

My third grade students love reading together, creating together, and expressing their knowledge. They love to learn and serve. I love the quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin

My students are primarily gifted and/or talented academically.

They love to read. I have difficulty keeping up with their voracious reading appetites. They love books that stimulate their thinking!

They love to learn and love to do projects where they incorporate science, technology, engineering, art, and math. They enjoy cooperating with each other and are very caring. They have a desire to be kind and to serve each other. Our school is a great mix of people from all economic backgrounds. We have students who come from wealthy families and students who cannot afford adequate clothing or basic school supplies. The community is great at reaching out and helping those who need help but cannot supply all of the needs in our school.

My Project

During Covid, many of the students relied on reading as one of their avenues of entertainment when many other options felt unsafe or were unavailable. I want to encourage this avenue of entertainment. I would love to refresh my class library. I check out books to my students, so that they can take them home.

Many of the books that I have selected are award-winning books on the MENSA reading list and are not available in our school library.

I have students who want to work their way through that list which designed specifically to enrich students who love to read. I have also included books that will entice students whose go-to entertainment is gaming. Reading practice opens the world to the imagination, teaches valuable vocabulary, enhances social skills, and more. All of these things may have suffered during Covid.

In addition, some of the books I am ordering are read and do. Others are books to generate thinking--word puzzle, math puzzles, and more. This will stimulate their intellect and help their brains to make new connections. The books with origami are also very therapeutic emotionally.
