My Students

Teaching in a low income school with nearly half of the population military gives me the opportunity to experience many different students as well as learning style. In spite of the many changes and challenges they face, I am seeking to provide a constant, creative, and intentional learning experience.

My students are very amiable, persistent, and witty.

The students love to move, read, and they appreciate encouragement. Many of them are being raised in single parent households with one or more siblings and receive free and/or reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These factors may preclude them from receiving the early life experiences that many of us may see as “the norm”.

Each day the students come into my classroom, my focus is on how they can grow and how they can reach their full potential with my help. Though their home lives are out of my control, their school experiences are my responsibility and in my control. Finding innovative ways to achieve this goal gives me hope that I will be able to inspire these learners so they may continue to flourish in their academic excellence.

My Project

Having a class library has been proven to incite the reader in every student. These books will allow students to confidently and independently read texts that are on their individual levels. For students who may still be struggling with fluency, these books have many pictures which helps students to feel a sense of comfort with opening a book and minimizes their intimidation.

This project will make a difference in my students because the books will develop a love for independent reading.

Our classroom has not yet developed a classroom library to fully develop this skill. With this classroom library students can read to their friends, a reading buddy bear, or simply whisper read to themselves.
